Lifelong Winthrop resident who built a career rooted in the love of books
Patricia E. McCarthy, a lifelong Winthrop resident, passed away in Cambridge on June 12, 2026 at the age of 74. Born May 3, 1952, in Winthrop, she was the daughter of the late Jeanette (Visconti) and Robert Fallon.
A graduate of Bridgewater State College, Patricia built a career rooted in the love of books. She served as a librarian at several schools and later worked as a bookseller for Barnes & Noble. She also contributed her knowledge and enthusiasm for reading at Tufts Medical Bookstore.
Patricia’s joy came from reading, walking her dog, and watching horse racing. She cherished time spent at the movies with her daughter, with whom she shared a deep and unwavering bond.
She was the devoted wife of Thomas G. McCarthy and the loving mother of Erin McCarthy; dear sister of Kathleen Wilcox and her husband, James of Vermont and the late Shelia Fallon and Carolyn (Rowe) Marks and her husband, Paul of New Hampshire; loving aunt of Leslie (Wilcox) Hyland and her husband, Brian of Vermont, Michele Marks, David Marks, Jill Marks and the late Robert Wilcox and the beloved friend of Matt and Carla.
A funeral service was held in the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Interment was private.
