Winthrop Officials Announce Beginning of Census Work

Chief Terence M. Delehanty, Town Manager Austin Faison and Town Clerk Carla Vitale would like to announce that U.S. Census workers have started collecting data for the 2020 U.S. Census.

Workers will be going door-to-door in order to collect the data and are expected to be in the area until Monday, March 30.

All workers will have proper identification and can conduct the work at the front door. Census workers will never ask for information like your social security number, bank information or a monetary donation.

“We encourage everyone to participate in the 2020 Census so that we can provide the most complete, accurate information about our town as possible,” Chief Delehanty said. “The money allocated to towns helps support the work done by the different departments, including the police department, and beneficial to helping fund the different trainings and tools we use to keep residents safe.”

According to Secretary of State William Galvin’s website dedicated to the Massachusetts 2020 Census, the census impacts how much federal and state funding is given to communities for various projects in areas including education, transportation and public health. The census also impacts the state’s representation in Congress and how many votes it has in the Electoral College, as well as representation in state and local government.
