Winthrop band ‘Locust’ helps kick off grand opening of The Amp at Suffolk Downs

The Amp at Suffolk Downs is officially open to the public, bringing a new 600-person-capacity outdoor amphitheater and open space right to the neighborhood’s doorstep. Located just a short ways away at 125 Salt Street in Revere, the 1.5-acre venue celebrated its grand opening as one of the first permanent public spaces in the massive 161-acre Suffolk Downs redevelopment project.

For Winthrop residents, the biggest highlight of the opening lineup was the venue’s inaugural concert on July 10, which featured Locust, a popular Winthrop-based band.

The Amp is designed to serve as a year-round destination for live performances, cultural events, and neighborhood gatherings. In addition to being a community hub, the space doubles as a major coastal resiliency asset. Situated near Sales Creek, the amphitheater’s basin features a smart stormwater management system designed to reduce local flooding risks and filter runoff before it reaches the creek.

“The Amp reflects our broader vision for a resilient, community-centered neighborhood,” said Thomas N. O’Brien, Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of The HYM Investment Group. “We are creating space for residents and visitors alike to gather, connect, and enjoy programming year-round.”

The grand opening aligns with the Suffolk Downs Summer Series, a lineup of free events running Thursday and Friday evenings through September. Upcoming highlights at the new venue include:

• August 7: A tribute to the 60th anniversary of the Beatles’ historic 1966 concert at Suffolk Downs, performed by the 4EverFab Beatles Band.

• September 11: A funk and disco night featuring Booty Vortex.

In addition to concerts, neighbors can head to the adjacent space, The Yard @ Beachmont Square, for “Blue Line Flex”—a rotating series of free outdoor fitness classes ranging from yoga and Pilates to boxing and HIIT.

The Amp is easily accessible from Winthrop via the MBTA Blue Line at the Beachmont station. For more information and the full summer schedule, visit www.atsuffolkdowns.com.
