One year ago, Harbor City Church had its first meeting in Jason and Micah Tallent’s living room. Since then, the couple from Arkansas, along with their five children, have immersed themselves in the Winthrop community, offering outreach at 26 town events. The Harbor City Church tent has quickly become a staple at all town events, where the family has handed out 3,800 cookies, 430 nacho bowls, 3,000 bags of popcorn, 85 gallons of coffee, and 1,200 cones of cotton candy.
“We want people to know that someone cares,†said Jason, who regularly hands out coffee at the train station. “There is something about serving others that breaks down barriers.â€
Last Sunday, the Tallent family was joined by several dozen members of the growing church at the Middle School gym, to celebrate a successful year of service. Several of the members stood up to reflect on their appreciation for the church’s time in the community.
Jeff Carson, founder of Mi-Amore, a project that recovers and reallocates edible food, shared his thanks for the Tallents’ commitment to the community.
“You are present in this community in so many ways, from soccer and basketball camps to beach cleanup. There is a shared connection to making Winthrop a better community.â€
In addition to their presence at town events, the Harbor City Church has hosted soccer nights, basketball skills and drills camp, participated in beach and park clean-ups and assisted with landscaping and clean up on several properties in town including French Square, the Arthur T. Cummings School, the Senior Center, and the high school. They’ve partnered with Mi- Amore and helped host events for Bike Winthrop, Walk for Scleroderma, little league, and the Winthrop Historical Society.
“We desire is to be a church for those who don’t go to church, or who have given up on church,†said Jason. “We have a simple vision, it is to Love God, Love Others, and Serve the world.â€
Harbor City Church meets on Sundays at 10 a.m. am at the old middle school gym, 151 Pauline St.
