Local Resident Betsy Shane Receives “Unsung Heroine” Award

House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo recently joined the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women (MCSW) to honor Winthrop resident Betsy Shane as an Unsung Heroine.

Betsy has served as the executive director of the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce since September of 2013. In that time, Betsy has effectively fostered economic development in Winthrop, helping to grow the businesses district while recognizing the unique character of the town. Betsy’s efforts on behalf of the Chamber have increased tourism by supporting local businesses, with a continued focus on the town’s small and mid-sized companies. Since assuming this role, Betsy has upgraded the Chamber’s Web site, built a cutting-edge app, and has created a user-friendly-business directory, events calendar, and newsfeed. Betsy’s advocacy on Beacon Hill has resulted in the Winthrop Chamber securing numerous grants through the state budget to support these efforts.

“Betsy’s work has resulted in proven gains for Winthrop,” said DeLeo. “Her love and respect for Winthrop underpin all of her efforts. I am so proud to represent and live in a community where individuals like Betsy work tirelessly to make our town a better place for residents, business owners, and visitors. I thank Betsy for all of her work and for her enthusiasm in partnering with the House, and congratulate her on this well-deserved honor.”

The annual Unsung Heroines awards recognize women who typically do not make the news, but make a great impact in their communities, using their time, talent, and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others and make a difference.
