Thank you so very much for the editorial you wrote about “The Legacy of Gloria Steinem” in the 09-17-26 “Winthrop Sun Transcript”/”The Independent Newspaper Group”. I loved the way you traced through the years Ms. Steinem’s numerous efforts to execute equality and justice for women in areas of the economy, pay equality, law, and social justice.
Gloria Steinem was born in 1934 and recently died on 09-02-2026. The editorial aptly noted women’s reform, revolution “out of the kitchen”, out of poverty, and out of the limited role of mother and homemaker. The editor pointed out women’s movement into areas of medicine, science, the economy, engineering and the like. I myself, born in 1945, recall options of teacher, nurse, or secretary all of which seem limited in 2026 eyes looking on women’s current role options.
I think it important to note, however, that the editor also shared that “Gloria Steinem realized that the goal of achieving full equality between men and women still has a long way to go: The longstanding issues of unequal pay, sexual harassment in the workplace, and domestic violence in the home still plague our society.”
Again, thank you, Editor, for writing this tribute to Gloria Steinem and an historical summary of some positive societal changes that women have fought for over the past 100+ years since women gained the right to vote in 1920.
