VIETNAM MEMORIAL RE-DEDICATION on March 29

Active Vietnam Veteran Richard Honan announced that, with School Committee support, American Legion Post 146 will re-dedicate the Vietnam Memorial originally installed at the old Winthrop High School on May 22, 1988. The re-dedication will take place in the lobby of the new WHS, S. Main St., on Wednesday, March 29, at 7 p.m.  Honan noted that it’s appropriate to re-dedicate the memorial at this time, as March 29th is Vietnam Veterans Day.  Following the re-dedication, a new American flag, donated by Post 146, will be hoisted up the flagpole in front of the new High School.

Author/historian to speak AT WPL

Author/historian James O’Connell will speak at the Winthrop Public Library Thursday on April 6 at 6:30 pm. He is the author of “Dining Out in Boston.”

Dining Out in Boston: A Culinary History (2016) is a historical overview of Boston’s restaurants. Boston has been one of America’s leading laboratories of urban culture, including restaurants, and its history provides valuable insights into American food ways. Dining Out in Boston explains how the city was a pioneer in elaborate hotel dining, oyster houses, French cuisine, ostentatious banquets, ice cream parlors, ethnic cooking, the colonial revival of traditional New England dishes, the “gourmet revolution,” student hangouts,  and trendy foodie culture. O’Connell has written six books on city planning and New England history. He is employed as a planner by the National Park Service.

Attention Photographers or Anyone with a Camera!

Residents are invited to participate in a project that will result in a collection of photos representing the Winthrop community.  Interested residents of all ages should contact the library to register to take part in this fun project.  Please register anytime from now through April 26.

Last year we received some terrific photos, held an exhibit and published a book!  See all of those photos here:  https://digitalheritage.noblenet.org/winthrop/collections/show/4

There are a few guidelines to follow:

  • All photos are to include at least one person as the main focus. But, any number of people may appear in a photo.
  • All photos should be taken in Winthrop during the month of April 2017.
  • Each photographer may submit up to 10 photos.
  • Submissions may be exhibited or included in a published book, and will be added to the Library’s historical archive on the Noble Digital Heritage, with proper artist credit.
  • All entries will be judged by a panel whose decisions are final.
  • We’ve added a requirement to include at least one picture of someone that you don’t know, or didn’t know before you asked to take their photo.
