Explorers Take Title

The Winthrop Police Explorers won the overall championship at the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Explorer Competition held in May at Mount Ida College in Newton.

Winthrop’s Police Explorers defeated eight other posts from Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut.

There were nine competitions that included crime scene investigation, physical agility, career development, street crimes, first aid, operating under the influence investigation, suspicious activity response, and response to a reported felony assault.

Some of the highlights for the Winthrop team:

Explorer Captain Samantha Petersen scored first place in career development and operating under the influence investigation.

Vanessa Petersen finished first in a tough physical agility course competition.

Rich Ferrino finished in first place in operating under the influence investigation.

Jillian Flowers and Peter Carbone easily defeated all other competitors to win suspicious activity report.

Explorers Chris Miccichi, Mike Mahoney, Jorge Roman, and Beau Schlicting all participated and helped to secure the championship by finishing in the top three in several other competitions.

They are proud members of Post 99, the 2013 Massachusetts Explorer Champions.

Explorer Post 99 trainers are Officer Andrew Minichiello of the Boston Police, Officer Robert Ferullo, Officer Patrick Curran, and Officer Shawn McCarthy.

Sgt. Steve Rogers, senior advisor and director, and Lt. Frank Scarpa, Post commander, guide the Winthrop Police Explorers.
