21st Century Lists Summer Activities

The Winthrop 21st Century Community Learning Center’s after-school program is drawing to a close next week, but according to Executive Director Cathy DelVento, parents will continue to have access to an affordable after school option through the end of the school year, thanks to 21st CCLC’s partnership with Kathy’s Place Youth Center.

“We are coming to the end of our 34-week programming period, but, it is important to note that through Kathy’s Place Youth Center, we will be able to provide after school on a drop-in basis through the end of the school year,” explained DeLVento. “We’re also very excited about our summer program this year, which will focus on the sciences throughout the seven week program.”

DelVento said the summer program will seek to build on partnerships and relationships that were formed with 21st CCLC this past school year, including with the Museum of Science, the Children’s Museum and the Creative Minds Program, through the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

“We’re going to have a Science, Technology and Math (STeM) themed summer program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through the summer and on Mondays and Fridays we’re going to focus on small community service projects and the Reading is Alive program,” she said.

The 21st CCLC summer program at Kathy’s Place actually begins on June 18, after school ends for the year, and runs for 11 weeks until the end of the summer. However, the core weeks between July 2 and August 17, will be the curriculum based “Summer Adventure” program.

Between June 1 and June 15, Kathy’s Place Youth Center will operate a drop-in service on Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 6 p.m. for a small fee, $12 per day for regular students, $5 for reduced lunch students and $2 per day for free lunch students.
