Delvento Talks About Being President of NE Region of MASC

Alicia DelVento

Winthrop High School junior Alicia DelVento, daughter of Precinct 3 Councilor Nick DelVento and Executive Director of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Cathy DelVento, has taken up the family pastime of being involved, by getting herself elected as President of the Northeast Region of the Massachusetts Association of School Councils.

As a regional president in the MASC system, DelVento is one of 11 board members in the statewide organization.

“As a freshman I got involved with Student Council, which is different from Student Government, and I instantly fell in love with it,” explained DelVento. “As I got more involved, I applied to go to the state convention and as a sophomore I ran to be the secretary of the Northeast Region MASC and loved that experience too.”

DelVento said that she doesn’t see Student Council as a political activity, though her father is an elected official in town and her mother was the original aide to then-State Representative Robert DeLeo, the current Speaker of the Massachusetts House.

“This organization really focuses on leadership and school involvement, and commitment to school” said DelVento. “I really believe that everyone starting school as a freshman should spend some time on Student Council, just to learn about it, but I also feel like I have had an amazing opportunity being from Winthrop, because we have such a good program here.”

DelVento also walks the walk on the issue of school involvement serving as Secretary of the Junior Class in Student Government, playing tennis on the WHS Tennis Team, and participating in the Gay and Straight Student Alliance. She is also a cheerleader, who has already been named as one of the captains for the 2012 Football cheering squad.

“I don’t know if I’d be involved with Student Council, if I’d gone to another school,” added DelVento. “This is an amazing program we have here at Winthrop and I can’t thank my advisor Mr. Gobiel enough.”
