This past Saturday, the Winthrop Police Department hosted the 18th Annual Massachusetts Police Explorer Competition. Explorers (youth between the ages of 14 and 20) from various communities around the state competed in 17 events including burglary in progress, traffic stops, family disturbance, street crimes, arrest and search just to name a few. Westwood Police Explorer Post finished in 1st place, Our very own Winthrop Police Explorer Post #99 finished in 2nd, and Methuen Police Explorer Post finished in 3rd place.
The event was canceled the 2 years previous due to covid-19. This is the first time Winthrop Police Department has hosted the event. Lt. Rogers stated, “We have attended every competition since they started so it was an honor to finally get to host the eventâ€. Winthrop Police would like to thank the following departments for support and help in the event. Massachusetts State Police, Boston Police, Saugus Police, Lynn Police, Methuen Police, Westwood Police, Newton Police, North Andover Police and Winchester Police. Lastly, thanks to Jackie Lamont of the Child Advocacy Center / Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, for her presentation on internet safety for teenagers.
