The Winthrop High boys basketball team dropped its season-opening contests to two of the better teams in the Northeastern Conference South Division this past week.
The Vikings came out on the short end of their season-opener with Gloucester, 66-44, Wednesday evening. Winthrop fell behind by a 30-18 margin at the half and never could quite recover. Cody Wasson led Winthrop with 15 points and Loran Shuka reached double figures with 10 points. Brendan Van Dalinda played well on defense and did a nice job on the boards.
Two days later the Vikings traveled to Danvers, the two-time defending Division 2 state champs. Winthrop never was in the game in a 78-35 defeat. Bobby Fisher hit for 10 points and Jake Chiudina added nine.
“We’e overall a young team and we’re a work in progress,” said WHS head coach Mike DiMarino. “We’ve shown flashes of playing well, but we have to be more consistent to get where we want to be.”
Winthrop was set to take on Pope John this past Monday (December 23) and will play in the Barry Kipnes Holiday Tourney in No. Reading this weekend. Winthrop plays in the opening round Friday at 5:00 against Greater Lawrence Regional and then will play at either 5:00 or 7:00 Saturday against either Lynnfield or No. Reading.
