Listen, my Vikings, and you shall hear, Winthrop Youth Football will soon be here.
Yes, we recalibrated the line above from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,†but the point is that Winthrop’s youth football and cheerleading teams will officially start practices next week.
WYF President Peter Caggiano said that teams will be using Ingleside Park for their practices, while Miller Field will be the site of Winthrop home games.
Winthrop will be fielding tackle-football teams in the Cape Ann Youth Football League’s third-and-fourth grade division, fifth-and-sixth-grade division, and seventh-and-eighth grade division.
Teams will play a nine-game season that includes playoffs in Weeks 8 and 9. The league’s Super Bowl follows the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the playoffs.
“We’ll have between 75-100 kids playing football and we’ll probably have 50-60 cheerleaders,†said Caggiano.
Caggiano is beginning his 12th season as president, his 17th overall in the program. He and the other WYF coaches and officers were particularly proud of this year’s NEC championship Winthrop High football team that featured many graduates of the local youth football organization. The same is true for the Winthrop High cheerleading team that nearly took home the NEC cheerleading championship, finishing a very-close second.
Viking football players such as Bobby Hubert, Cam Conway, Chris Ferrara, and Bryan Conceicao and others began their football careers in the WYF program in the third grade.
The organization is planning a major “Tailgate Party†fundraiser at the Winthrop Golf Course for the opening home game of the Winthrop High football season.
Football players and cheerleaders can still register for the 2021 season on the website, winthropyouthfootball.com.
