Salem Edges WHS Boys Tennis Team

The Winthrop High boys tennis team was frustrated this past week both by Mother Nature, which rained out their match with Swampscott, and by Salem, which  handed the Vikings a 4-1 defeat Tuesday.

The Vikings had pulled out a close victory against Salem last week in a dramatic contest, but Salem prevailed the second time around in another hard fought affair in which many of the sets went to a tie break.

Jake Rand at first singles provided Winthrop with its only victory with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph. “That was a big win for Jake in the second set after a close first set,” noted WHS head coach Barbara Hoffman.

Ryan McKinnon faced the same opponent he beat last week in a close match at second singles and had another close match today, but unfortunately was not able to pull through. Ryan lost the first set, won the second, and then played a tie break in the third set in which he fell short.

Third singles Tom Lund also lost in a very close match, losing the first set 7-5 and then battling hard in the second set before falling by a 6-3 score.

At first doubles, the duo of  Jake McKinnon and Luke Hodgkins also played a tight match, losing 5-7, 6-7 (the second set went to a close tie break which they lost 6-8). At second doubles, Adam Holden and Mike Psomos fell in two sets.

Hoffmann and her squad are set to host Lynn Classical Friday and play at Lynn English Monday.
