Ekaidat, Brogan Win for WHS Boys Track

Although the Winthrop High boys track team came put on the short end of a 92-36 decision to Revere, a number of Vikings turned in fine performances. Jordan Ekaidat was a double winner, capturing the 100 meter dash in 11.7 seconds and the 200 dash in 24.2. Jordan also grabbed a second in the long jump with a landing of 18-9 to finish with 13 points on the day.

Pat Brogan topped the field in the two mile in a time of 11:20, which was a breakout performance for Patrick, who set a personal record (PR) by 25 seconds. Brogan also earned three points for his second place performance in the javelin with a toss of 105-5, his best throw of the season.

The Vikings took first place in the 4 x 400 relay in a time of 4:55. The Winthrop quartet consisted of Brogan, Nick Floyd, Brian Manning, and Jerry Driscoll.

Matt Stasio added three points onto the Winthrop scoresheet with a second place discus throw of 92-2. Contributing single points to the Winthrop total were: Rob Ascolillo in the 400 meter low hurdles in 72.6 and the 100 high hurdles in 20.00; Mike Caputo in the 400 meter dash in 59.0, which was his first time competing in that event; Brian Manning in the mile in 5:39.9, a PR by 13 seconds. “Brian’s hard work is paying off,” noted WHS head coach Dennis Floyd.

At Saturday’s Northeastern Conference Freshman/Sophomore Meet, Ascolillo and Dave Gallo combined for eight points for Winthrop. Gallo’s discus throw of 85-0 landed him in third place in the field. Ascolillo sped to a season’s best of 68.6 in the 400 meter dash, which placed him fifth among his peers.

Other Vikings who competed were: Ascolillo with a triple jump of 32-5 for 14th place;  Mario  Mazzone in the 800 in 2:40 for 17th place; Nick Floyd in the mile in 5:45 for 14th place and in the long jump with a leap of 16-2.5 for ninth place.

The Vikings will take on Gloucester today (Thursday) at Saugus.
