The long-anticipated sale of the Dalrymple School to the East Boston Community Development Corporation is just about done and it is great news for the town. Town officials and ECDC representative are expected to sign the appropriate papers in the next two weeks or so. The $1.3 million from the sale will be transferred to the town land account and the funds can be used for capital improvement projects in the town.
The plans call for the total renovation of the historic Dalrymple School building and construction of 27 units for seniors with low incomes. The lot, which has been vacant for a long time, will become the site of a beautiful building full of vibrancy, thus removing both an eyesore and a safety hazard from the Highlands neighborhood, a situation which had gone on for far too long.
Al Caldarelli, executive director of the EBCDC, is understandably excited to begin the renovation project and restore the historic building. Caldarelli said seniors will be notified about the application process and he expects many candidates to apply for housing.
The development process may have taken longer than many had hoped, but at long last it’s onward and upward for the Dalrymple School site and we look forward to watching the transformation of this land into a senior housing building.
