Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the spectacular new school building on Thursday, Oct. 1 in Wakefield.
Northeast Superintendent of Schools David DiBarri welcomed the many guests to the celebration of the completion of the $317 million project. The school district consists of 12 communities, including the Town of Winthrop.
State Treasurer Deb Goldberg, Chair of the Massachusetts School Building Authority, Mass. Commissioner of Education Pedro Martinez, and Sen. Jason Lewis were the guest speakers.
Rep. Jeff Turco joined Winthrop’s representative on the Northeast Regional School Committee, Robert O’Dwyer, as special guests at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Turco called the project “the culmination of a wonderful team effort and a reason to celebrate.” “As a one- time student at Northeast Regional, I am in awe of the new facility. It is beautiful and pedalogically sound in its design,” said Turco. “As a supporter of vocational education, I am thrilled that this new facility will allow expansion of the student body by 50 percent. Special thanks to Superintendent David DiBarri for his leadership and vision in making this new facility a reality. Finally, thanks to former Speaker Robert DeLeo for his leadership in changing the state funding formula to make this project financially viable. All in all, this was a wonderful team effort and is a reason to celebrate.”
