Town manager provides updates on construction projects

Winthrop Town Manager Tony Marino provided an update on several ongoing projects, including the construction of the new fire station on Pauline Street, to the town council this week.

“The Fire Station stormwater pipework is complete, and we are waiting for the new retaining wall block to show up later this week,” Marino stated. “Once the retaining wall work is complete, the General Contractor, G&R Construction, will begin the site and foundation work in the next few weeks.”

Work also began this week on the installation of a riprap wall to help stop erosion at 242-244 Grandview Avenue. Marino said it’s anticipated that the work will take about two weeks to complete.

In other ongoing infrastructure projects, Marino said the Revere Street reconstruction project is coming to an end, with the contractor closing out some punchlist items.

“We thank everyone for their patience with this project and are happy to move forward with revamped Revere Street, including new utility work and sidewalks,” Marino said.

The coastal berm installation of the sand is scheduled to wrap up this week at Yirrell Beach.

“We are now waiting for the vendor to come and install the seagrass, and our DPW crew will install the wooden slat beach fence,” Marino stated. “We will also install the five entrance ramps at the locations that we picked with the Yirrell Beach residents.”

In other business, the town manager said the bids recently came in for a proposed townwide parking and traffic study.

“The low bidder was BETA-Inc. coming in as the low bidder with a price of $137,648,” Marino said. “The other bids were $300,000 or higher, with a high bid of $439,500. The Town Council will need to let my office know how they would like to pay for this Parking & Traffic study.”

Marino has previously stated that the traffic and parking study could take approximately nine months to complete once it gets underway.
