Rogers selected as new Police Chief

Current Winthrop Deputy Police Chief Steve Rogers will take over the top spot in the department as of Oct. 1.

Town Manager Tony Marino recently announced the appointment of Rogers as the town’s next police chief, effective next month. Rogers will take the reins from current Chief John Goodwin, who officially retires on Oct. 31.

“Chief Rogers will work side by side with Chief Goodwin for one month until October 31, which is Chief Goodwin’s official retirement date,” said Marino.

Rogers has served in the Winthrop Police Department for over 30 years as a Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Deputy Chief. He was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2024 to fill the position Goodwin held when Goodwin was elevated to chief. Rogers has a master’s degree in criminal justice and corrections from Anna Maria College.

Marino interviewed four internal candidates to replace Goodwin before selecting Rogers.

“We were incredibly fortunate to have a number of worthy candidates and each brought their own strengths,” said Town Council President Jim Letterie. “Ultimately, the decision was made to go with Steve Rogers. Steve has been an asset to the town of Winthrop for so many years and in so many different areas.

“This is the culmination of his life’s work and we are incredibly happy for him and his family.”

Rogers expressed his thanks for the appointment.

“I am honored to be appointed Chief of Police for the Town of Winthrop, the community that I grew up in and chose to serve as a police officer,” Rogers said. “After 34 years serving the Winthrop Police Department, this appointment is especially meaningful to me. I have had the privilege to work alongside the many dedicated women and men of this department.

“I am humbled and look forward to serving the residents of the community.”
