John Tipping
United Airlines retiree and member of both the Winthrop Golf and Winthrop Yacht Clubs
John F. Tipping, 79, of Winthrop, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family and friends.
Born and raised in Winthrop, John was the cherished son of Margaret (Peggy) and Charles Tipping. He was the loving husband of Anne (Mosca) Tipping, his partner of 54 years who would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this May. He was a devoted father to Jennifer Tipping O’Connell and her husband, Matt O’Connell of Milton, and Stephanie Tipping Withers and her husband, Charlie Withers of San Francisco. John was the fun loving Papa of Catherine, Ryan, Andrew, Jack, Millie, and Cricket, whose ages range from 16 to 10. He took immense pride in watching each of them grow, never missing a chance to cheer on those nearby and making cherished visits to San Francisco.
John grew up in Winthrop as one of the “Three Tips”—a trio of brothers with Jamie and Charlie, known throughout town for their friendship, camaraderie, and unbreakable bond.
He also shared a close and loving relationship with his sister-in-law, Marie Clements, and his brother-in-law, Michael Clements, and took great joy in spending time with his cherished nieces and nephews.
John dedicated 42 years to United Airlines in sales, a career that gave his family the gift of travel. But his true calling began 15 years ago when he retired and became a professional at the art of retirement itself. He golfed constantly at his beloved Winthrop Golf Club during warm months and his regular golf league in Florida during the winter. A lifelong lover of the ocean, John was a member of the Winthrop Yacht Club, loved sailing, and could often be found walking along the water enjoying the view of the boats.
John will be remembered for his love of life, his sense of humor, his loyalty to those he loved, his presence at every important moment, and the joy he brought to every room he entered. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit lives on in the laughter of his grandchildren, the memories shared around countless tables, and the bonds of the Three Tips.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, 147 Winthrop Street, Winthrop. A funeral mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop Street, Winthrop. Burial will be at Belle Isle Cemetery, directly followed by a luncheon at the Winthrop Arms. In lieu of flowers, please send your support to Winthrop High School Sports or take your friend for a drink at the golf course.
