Winthrop P.D. hosts 5th Annual Youth Academy

As part of the Shannon Community Safety Initiative Grant, the Winthrop Police Department

hosted its 5th annual Youth Police Academy for the summer of 2024. The dates of the Academy were for the week of August 19-August 23. The Youth Academy ran daily from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The Youth Academy was free of charge and a polo shirt, t-shirt, and hat were provided. Students were also provided lunch for the week.

Events included a visit to Massport Fire and Police; a Suffolk County House of Correction tour; visits to the Boston Municipal Court, the Suffolk County DA’s Office, and the Massachusetts State House; a visit with the Mass. State PoliceHarbor Unit; Yoga w/Be the Light Yoga with Kathleen Coffey;Physical Education; and MILO.

The coordinating staff for the WinthropYouth Academy were Deputy Chief Steve Rogers (grant oversight and scheduling), Lt. Mary Crisafi (operations), Sergeant Samantha Ferrino (staff coordinator), Officer Carlos Dutra (staff coordinator), and Officers Hamilton and Adamson (fitness coordinators).

Lieut. Crisafi, Sgt. Ferrio, and Officer Dutra were commended for running a superb program with many activities for the attendees.
