A team of local independent filmmakers is turning one of the world’s oldest legends into a Sci-Fi crime drama.
LUPERCALIANS, from Winthrop filmmaker Nick D’Agostino, is currently raising funds through Seed&Spark to bring the ambitious independent film to life. Inspired by the ancient myth of Romulus and Remus, this Sci-Fi Gangster story at its core is about family, addiction, and environmental exploitation.
The team has released a proof-of-concept in the form of the film’s prologue, giving audiences their first look at the world of LUPERCALIANS as the fundraising campaign gears up for its final stretch.
At the center of the story are twin brothers Romolo and Remo, one a member of a drug empire, the other a degenerate whose trail of chaotic life choices have finally caught up with him. The crime syndicate exploits strange sea snails found off their shores, extracting a substance that has become a coveted narcotic. As their family, criminal enterprise, and shared history begin to unravel, the boundaries between ancient myth and disturbing reality start to coalesce.
Writer/director Nick D’Agostino previously created the award-winning micro-budget sci-fi comedy SUPER BEEF, which developed a fanbase through film festivals around the country. With LUPERCALIANS, the filmmakers are looking to take the next step in production value while maintaining the creative independence that has defined their work.
The production team includes cinematographer Lucia Tarro and producer Dorian Magee, alongside a local cast that includes Kyle Padeni, Leyla Aria, Francisco Huergo, and Chris Williams.
The filmmakers’ Seed&Spark campaign is raising $15,000 toward production. The funds will be used to pay cast and crew, partner with special-effects artists, rent production equipment, and cover post-production, costumes, catering and other necessities.
The LUPERCALIANS crowdfunding campaign is currently live on Seed&Spark and ends on September 13, 2026.
