Fraud Fighters Workshop Comes to Winthrop

About 50 residents attended the Suffolk County Fraud Fighters Workshop presented by District Attorney Kevin Hayden’s office and community partners. The workshop was hosted by the Winthrop Police Department’s Senior Monthly Outreach Program at the Winthrop Senior Center. 

The goal of these workshops is empower older adults to protect themselves against financial fraud. The presentation covers common scams and the necessary tools on how to stay alert and safe. Resource folders and members of Hayden’s office and Metro Credit Union representatives were available after to answer additional questions. 

District Attorney Kevin Hayden emphasized how important this cause is to him and shared with residents that his mother was a victim of financial fraud. 

State Representative Jeff Turco thanked Hayden’s office and the Winthrop Police Department for raising awareness and looking out for residents. 

Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty highlighted a recent incident in which a Winthrop resident was scammed out of $34,000. Chief Delehanty urged residents “when in doubt, call us at (617) 846-1212. “

The Suffolk County Fraud Fighters is a multi-agency external effort to help residents identify and avoid scams. Also involved are the Boston, Chelsea, and Revere police departments, the Boston Housing Authority, the Vine Street Community Center, Hebrew SeniorLife, Central Boston Elder Services, Metro Credit Union, Mystic Valley Elder Services and the US Secret Service.
