Senior Center Reopens Following Burst Pipe

After a burst pipe in the main dining room dumped a torrent of water into the Robert DeLeo Senior Center,  it has been reopened.

Kathryn Dixon, director of the center, said the center was opened Monday with a hole still in the ceiling exposing the sprinkler system pipes that burst, causing the problem. Dixon said water was on every floor in the building.

“It was running right out the front door,” Dixon said.

She explained that staff only were in the building on Jan. 22, the building had been closed for the weekend.

“Chief Flanagan and all the firefighters were lifesavers,” said Dixon. “And Peg Lyons of the Winthrop Housing Authority were generous for allowing to use their space on Golden Drive.”

For two weeks the center set up for senior lunch at Golden Drive.

Ruined in the flood were new light fixtures, all the floors and furniture.

There is no dollar estimate yet for the damage, but insurance adjusters have been in to access the situation.
