Maria Rago to Run 2019 Boston Marathon to Benefit Family Reach

Winthrop resident Maria Rago is taking some major steps to raise $10,000 for a noteworthy organization. As one of her lifelong dreams, Rago has committed to finishing the 2019 Boston Marathon for Family Reach, a national non-profit organization committed to alleviating the financial burden that causes hardships for families.

Working with more than 300 hospitals and cancer centers nationwide, Family Reach provides immediate financial assistance, education and navigation to families before they hit critical breaking points. The goal of the organization is to bridge the gap between hospital and home, quickly providing the vital support families need to stay afloat.

“Reaching the finish line on Boylston Street has been a life-long goal and childhood dream of mine,” said Rago, who has been tracking miles and strengthening her stride in her free time. “I can’t wait to get there, but I’m also so excited for the journey that lies ahead.”

Rago is a special education teacher at Brighton High School, where she teaches ninth-grade physics and 11th-grade advanced algebra to severely emotionally and behaviorally disturbed students. While she has run several half marathons, this will be her first full marathon.

“As I train for the Boston Marathon, I am committed to raising over $10,000 for Family Reach. I want to ensure families battling cancer can keep a roof over their heads, food on the table and maintain reliable access to treatment.”
