Author to discuss Winthrop trains

Author William Lieberman, a Winthrop native will speak at the Winthrop Public Library on Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. There will be a slide presentation and a book signing on his book “The Train on the Beach: Forgotten Railroads that Transformed Winthrop, Orient Heights, and Revere Beach, Massachusetts.” He will also hold a book signing at Winthrop Book Depot & Cafe, 11 Somerset Ave. at 10:30 a.m.

Lieberman was born and raised in Winthrop. His fascination with the town’s railroad lore led him to a career in transportation planning. He received his bachelor’s degree at Northeastern University and his master’s at the University of North Carolina. For almost 50 years, Lieberman has been engaged by transportation consulting firms and public agencies. The latter include the transit systems in Portland (OR), San Diego and San Francisco, where he served as principal planner. He considers himself fortunate to have followed the advice to “choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Bill and his family live in San Francisco and make regular pilgrimages back to Boston.

“I first became interested in railroads as a hobby when I was a student at Winthrop Junior High School. When it came time to choose a topic for my senior history class term paper a few years later (I was in the Class of 1963), I naturally chose Winthrop’s railroads. Most adults at that time remembered the old ‘Narrow Gauge’ that had served East Boston, Revere, Lynn and Winthrop until 1940, but few knew about other small railroads that had operated in Winthrop and Revere Beach in the 1870s and ’80s.” Lieberman said.

winthrop without stigma awards ceremony by casa

This year Citizens Against Substance Abuse (CASA) would like to recognize a stigma warrior from the each of the following categories; Youth, Adult, Senior, and Local Business. The Awards Committee and the CASA board of directors will select recipients after reviewing all nomination submissions. Nominate as many folks from each category as you like.  In addition, please join us at the WinthropWithoutStigma Awards Ceremony on Oct. 1 to celebrate the winners!  Free to attend; delicious dessert and beverages will be served.

As a public health coalition, CASA’s aim is to form healthy communities. This effort is done  by working to create an environment conducive to healthy living. One of the main goals is to reduce obstacles to good health practices and a significant barrier to this is stigma. Stigma causes those who live with it to be; alienated and seen as “others,” perceived as dangerous, seen as irresponsible or unable to make their own decision, are less likely to be hired, less likely to get safe housing, more likely to be criminalized than offered health-care services, and/or afraid of rejection to the point that they don’t always pursue opportunities.

Many people don’t feel comfortable talking to their friends and family about what they’re dealing with. Those living with health-related stigma often internalize the stigma thereby damaging hopes for recovery and success. Many won’t seek treatment from professionals. As a result, their conditions worsen without the support and care they need to recover. And sadly, too often people take their own lives because they aren’t told by anyone that they’re not alone, that they can actually recover and that there is hope.

Everyone is affected by stigma in some capacity; whether it be a problem they face themselves or a friend, co-worker, relative, or neighbor. Stigma has no prejudice! It is CASA’s goal to build a community where people are free of stigma and can get the help they need to be healthy and successful.
