Peter Grimes

The news of the passing of Peter Grimes, who was an integral member of the Winthrop community for his entire life, brought a lot of sadness not only to those of us who are of Peter’s generation, but also to the hundreds of younger people who were privileged to have had Peter as their teacher, coach, and mentor.

When we think of Peter, we think of him not merely as a star athlete from his youth (he set a school single-game scoring record of 54 points while a basketball player at Dom Savio), but as someone who had great drive and energy and who expended his efforts for the betterment of our town for the entirety of his adult life.

Peter was involved in so many things that make Winthrop a great place, whether as the co-director for many years of the town’s summer basketball league, or as a state champion coach of the Winthrop High boys basketball team in 1995, or as the coach of a champion WHS girls basketball team that went 20-0, or as a beloved guidance counselor in our school system.

We know we join with countless fellow members of the Winthrop community who were privileged to know Peter and who will recall his life with fondness and appreciation. May he rest in peace.
