Former Fire Chief David Higginbotham, who passed away this week at the age of 78, was a consummate professional who devoted his entire life to making Winthrop a better place for his family, friends, and neighbors.
Dave was a lifelong resident of Winthrop and raised his own family in the town he loved. After graduating from Cathedral High School, he entered the Marines, serving for two years with that branch of the armed forces during which time he developed a lifelong attachment for the Marine Corps.
Shortly after his honorable discharge, Dave began his career with the Winthrop Fire Department, eventually rising through the ranks to attain the post of Fire Chief.
Dave and his wife Josephine (Joey) were integral members of our community for decades. Dave was an active member of the Elks, the American Legion, and the Rotary Club, while Joey also was active in both civic and business endeavors. Both were familiar and friendly faces around our town.
Dave Higginbotham was a gentleman in every aspect of that word who was a credit to his family, town, and country in everything he did. Those of us who knew Dave have been saddened to learn of his passing. We know join with the entire Winthrop community in offering our condolences to his family.
