Winthrop Arms was wonderful
Dear Editor
Coming back home from overseas is nothing new to this veteran nor is it unusual to “standby to standby†for hours in an airport waiting for that final connection home. Alas, this trip back was no different as I missed my flight out of Logan International to Saint Louis. Staring down a fitful eight hours in an airport, the USO at Logan recommended several local hotels. Little did I expect the open-arms-welcome I was to be given by the family owned Winthrop Arms Hotel and Restaurant. In 1916, it opened as one of the North Shore›s largest hotels. David Goll, purchased it in 1978 and his son Casey, and daughter, Kelsey, help him run it. Casey went above and beyond to help me navigate the labyrinthine maze of Logan International and secure a timely and low cost taxi to his hotel. As is done in a successful family business, he stayed way past his “shift†to personally welcome me home and ensure I had a wonderful room in a hotel full of charm, beauty, and elegance. It is the kindness and generosity of my fellow Americans that contributes to the exceptional nature of America. No amount of money can pay for that, and as for my money, the Goll family would have none of it that travel wearied night. “Get some sleep soldier; you need it, and thank you for your service. This one is on us.†said Casey Goll. God bless them and God bless the United States of America.
It truly was a very much needed respite on my part and a very kind deed on the Goll family’s part. I hope you are able to publish this letter of thanks. Please, do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions.
