Cornelius Doherty

Retired Boston Public Works Superintendent

Cornelius W. Doherty of Chester Avenue, Winthrop passed away suddenly at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on October 19. He was 88 years old.

Born in Boston, the beloved son of the late Catherine (O’Donnell) and Cornelius Doherty, he was raised in Charlesown and was a 1943 graduate of Cathedral High School. After his graduation, he went on to serve in the US Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he went to work for the City of Boston where he became the Superintendent of the Boston Public Works.

He was the devoted husband of the late Agnes B. (Costin) and the loving father of Richard Doherty and his wife, Paula of Braintree, John Doherty and his wife, Anne of Naples, Florida and the late Cornelius W. Doherty, Jr.; the dear brother of Patricia Crowley of Hyde Park and the late Francis Doherty, Mary Eloff and Catherine O’Neill; the cherished grandfather of Richard Doherty, Jr. and his wife, Jourdan of South Boston. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be conducted from the Ernest P. Caggiano and Son-O’Maley Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, October 23 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Interment will follow the Mass in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

Neil ‘Neilsie’ Penn

Of West Roxbury and Revere

Neil “Neilsie” Penn of West Roxbury and Revere passed away peacefully on October 17 after a brief illness. He was 44 years old.

He was the cherished and beloved son of Richard and Catherine (Belinfante) Penn of Revere and was adored by his sister Marcy Mucci and her husband, Brian. He is survived by one nephew, Nicholas Mucci, all of Revere.

We would like to express a sincere thank you to Dr. Deborah Dreyfus and the entire staff at the May House for the exceptional care and compassion they provided for Neil.

Arrangements were by Torf Funeral Service. Interment was private. Donations in Neil’s memory may be made to the May Institute, 630 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA 02132.
