10 YEARS AGO

Winthrop High track star Danyelle Dillard came home with a third place medal in the 200 meter dash at the All-State track meet held at Worcester State College. Danyelle won the Class D title the previous week. Her third place effort, which was just .26 of a second behind the winner, qualified her for the New England championships this weekend in Plymouth. Dillard also competed in the long jump event. Teammate Liz Doherty competed in the 100 meter high hurdles.

The WHS softball team won its state tourney opener with a 12-1 win over North Shore Tech, but then bowed out of the tourney with a 2-0 loss to top ranked Shawsheen. Winthrop managed only one hit in the latter game, an infield single by freshman Jen Ryan in the sixth inning. Shawsheen sophomore pitcher Jenn Elwell struck out 18 Lady Vikings. In the rout of No. Shore, Ashley Ferullo had a single and a double and drove in three runs. Ryan had two hits and scored three runs. Viking pitcher Jenna Perrotti allowed just three hits in the victory.

The WHS baseball team dropped its Division 3 tourney opener, 4-0 to Lynnfield. Viking Mike Montesano, who was the ace of the staff all season for first year coach Frank DeMarco’s squad,  pitched well for Winthrop, but poor defense behind him allowed in four unearned Lynnfield runs.

20 YEARS AGO

Marblehead ousted the WHS baseball team from the state tourney with a 2-0 win in the quarterfinal round. Coach Barry Rosen’s Vikings had defeated Marblehead in both of their meetings during the regular season, but Winthrop had earned a bye in the opening round and was coming off a 12 day layoff. Viking hurler Dave Melchionda pitched well, allowing seven hits and striking out two. Melchionda, who was the Viking ace during the season with an 8-1 record and a 1.80 ERA and who also hit .352, was named the Division 3 Player of the Year by the Boston Globe.

30 YEARS AGO

Three Lady Vikings, seniors Michelle DePasquale and Joan Matsumoto and sophomore Lisa Monteleone , were named to the NEC all star softball team.

40 YEARS AGO

The WHS baseball team, champion of the Northeastern Conference for the second time in three season, will host Burlington in an opening round game of the Class B state tournament Saturday. The Vikings clinched the NEC title with a 5-2 win over Newburyport behind the left arm of Nelson Smith. Capt. Jimmy Moore drove in the wining run with a sacrifice bunt.
