A Frank Statement: Sophomore Rb Corbett-frank Scores Three Touchdowns in One-point Victory over Pentucket

Sophomore running back Jordan Corbett-Frank ran for three touchdowns last Saturday at Pentucket to help the Vikings improve to a 4-3 record and first place in the Cape Ann/ Northeast Tier 3 division. The final score was 21-20 in favor of WHS.

Corbett-Frank totaled 19 carries for just 54 yards, but head coach Sean Driscoll noted that the young running back also suffered somewhat from a couple of missed plays and penalties.

“He probably should have had about 75 yards, but there were a couple of plays where they got to him in the backfield and another play that was called back on a penalty,” said Driscoll. “He also would’ve had another touchdown, which was called back on a penalty.”

The Vikings answered a first quarter score by Pentucket, with two second-quarter scores, runs by Corbett-Frank, including a seven-yarder and a four-yard run, and senior place kicker Quinton Dale added two extra points to give the Vikings a 14-6 halftime lead.

“Quinton has been a welcome addition to our team, he’s worked really hard in all facets of his game, but he’s really taken some pride in his kicks and they’ve been a big help to us,” said Driscoll, noting that the senior receiver, defensive back and kicker is 14 of 15 on extra points this season.

Corbett-Frank and Dale got plenty of help on offense as senior Phil Locigno ran 13 times for 102 yards, including a 38-yard run in the fourth quarter that put Winthrop in position for the go-ahead touchdown.

Mitchell Paulson, one week removed from having to leave a game with an injury, added six rushes for 25 yards.

In the passing game senior quarterback Jimmy Barker completed six of 10 passes for 104 yards and added 46 yard rushing on seven carries.

“We’re working Jimmy into the running game more and more, he can really be a threat from that spot for us,” said Driscoll.

After Pentucket scored on a nine-yard run early in the fourth quarter and converted the two-point play, the score was tied 14.

Enter Locigno and Corbett-Frank. After Locigno’s run gave the ball first and goal inside the Pentucket 10 yard line, just minutes after they’d pulled even, Corbett-Frank added his final score, a three-yard scamper. When Dale’s kick sailed through the uprights, the Vikings had a 21-14 lead.

Pentucket did add a late score, but chose to try for a two-point play that failed and Winthrop held on, as Pentucket’s final possession ended in a missed field goal in the closing seconds.

“It was a good high school football game,” said Driscoll. “The fans really got their money’s worth and I feel we beat a very good program. They’re a well-coached team, with several outstanding young players.”

Next up for Winthrop will be Amesbury (4-3, 1-0), at  Miller Field on Friday night, Oct. 28.

“It’ll be nice to be home after four games on the road,” said Driscoll. “It’s nice, knowing that we’ve been able to win three out of four games on the road and we are still in control of our division. So now, we have to take care of business and play a very good Amesbury team in order to keep the season moving along.”
