Up and Down Week for Softball Team

Up and down week for softball team The Winthrop High softball team had a rollercoaster ride last week with contests in three successive days that had their ups and downs.

On Wednesday Marblehead came to town and slipped away with a 4-3 victory in eight innings. Winthrop drew first blood in the opening inning when Alex Ferri led off with a single and Kristin Lanza followed with another hit. After Haley Benson reached on a fielder’s choice, Liana Ferullo bunted safely to load the bases Andrea Martucci then drove in the first run of the game.

In the fourth Marblehead answered back with two runs on one hit, but Winthrop tied the contest with a marker in its half of the fourth. Marblehead added a solo marker in the fifth, but once again the Lady Vikings responded in their half of the frame to knot matters at 3-3.

Winthrop outhit Marblehead15 to 5, but a lack of timely hitting, a couple of costly errors, and seven walks from Winthrop pitching allowed Marblehead to scratch out the extra inning win. The next day the Lady Vikings hit the road to Mt. Alvernia and continued their strong hitting performance, banging out 19hits and 11 runs.

The Viking pitching limited the Mustangs to just three hits. Alex Ferri got the start and went five innings in which she allowed just one hit, fanned eight, and walked only one. Jackie Heatherton came on for the final two frames and struck out three enemy hitters.

Rachel Delsolio swung some heavy metal for Winthrop, going3 for 4 with two doubles, a triple, three runs scored, and five RBI.

On Friday the 13th the Lady Vikings appropriately enough were in Salem. Ferri and Witch hurler Sarah Chasse fired shutout softball through five frames, but in the bottom of the sixth, a combination of walks and errors allowed Salem to put four tallies up on the scoreboard.

Taylor Brown spoiled Chasse’s shutout bid with a solo homer over the left field fence in the top of the seventh for the 4-1 finale.

With their record now at 7-8, WHS head Coach Dave Guffeyand crew hope to finish the regular season in strong fashion as they prepare for the state tournament.

“We have had some tough losses, but I’m hoping that we will be battle tested once tournament time rolls around,” said Guffey.

Winthrop was rained out of its games earlier this week. If the weather relents, the Lady Vikings will play Friday night vs. Gloucester at Cellucci with a start time of 5:00 or 6:00. They will travel Saturday morning to Lynn Classical for a contest at10:00 and then host Danvers Sunday afternoon at 12:30 at Cellucci Field.
