Winthrop Parks and Recreation Will Celebrate ‘Town Day’ on Aug. 20

The Winthrop Parks and Recreation Summer Parks will celebrate the 2021 season with its annual “Town Day” on Friday, Aug. 20 at Ingleside Park.

The fun-filled farewell to the summer is held on the last day of the program and features carnival-style amusements such as the Moon Bounce, games, pizza, and a barbecue. The festivities start at 10 a.m. and continue until 12:30 p.m.

Parks and Recreation Director Sean Driscoll said all 150 participants in the program, the summer parks counselors, and staff, will be attending the much-anticipated Town Day event.

“It’s been a great summer,” said Driscoll. “We have one week left and it’s been going really well.”

On Wednesday, approximately 80 campers traveled to Water Country in Portsmouth, N.H. for a daylong field trip. Earlier in the summer, campers enjoyed field trips to Canobie Lake Park, Spectacle Island, and Boston Harbor’s Codzilla, which is a boat ride.

Driscoll has been assisted by Program Coordinators Jimmy Carroll and Toni Ann Titemore in the administration of the program which is a summertime staple in the town.

Driscoll said the Parks Program will host its final concert and barbecue of the summer on Thursday, Aug. 19, at 6 p.m., at Ingleside Park.

The next day Sean Driscoll begins his fourth season as the head coach of the St. Mary’s High School football team. His son, former Winthrop star quarterback Dylan Driscoll, will be returning as the Spartans’ quarterbacks and defensive backs coach. Dylan has taken a position in the admissions/athletics department at Fisher Junior College, Boston.

Interestingly, one of Driscoll’s top players at St. Mary’s is running back and defensive back David Brown Jr., son of Winthrop Police Officer David Brown Sr.

The Spartans will be making a road trip to the island of Nantucket in Week 2 of the season.
