Boys Tennis Team Picks Up Two Wins

The Winthrop High boys tennis team earned a pair of victories this past week, defeating Lynn Classical on Friday and Lynn English on Monday in a rain shortened match.

The Vikings eked out a 3-2 triumph on their home court against Classical. Tom Lund was a winner at third singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. With Jake Rand having lost at first singles in a hard fought match , 6-4, 3-6,1-6, and Ryan McKinnon falling at second singles in another closely fought contest, 4-6, 5-7,Winthrop trailed 2-1 going into the doubles matches.

The first doubles tandem of Jake McKinnon and Luke Hodgkins handily won their match, 6-2, 6-1, to leave matters tied at 2-2 with the second doubles match to decide the outcome.

The Viking duo of Mike Psomos and Alex Patnod  fought hard and prevailed in a close match, 6-4, 6-4, to give Winthrop the victory.

The match at English saw WHS coach Barbara Hoffmann juggle her lineup because of the absence of two of her usual singles players. However, the Vikings stepped up their performance and came away with the victory.

Jake McKinnon, playing at second singles, triumphed 6-1,6-4, and Luke Hodgkins, playing in the third singles slot, also won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.The doubles pairing of Psomos and Patnod moved up to first doubles, but answered the challenge to defeat their English counterparts, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch the match for Winthrop.

Ryan McKinnon, playing at first singles in place of JakeRand, dropped his first set, but came back to win the second and was a game up in the third set when the rains came.

Freshman Adam Holden and sophomore Joe Gobiel,  playing their first varsity match together at second doubles, and made a good show, losing their first set 6-7 in a very close tie break (4-7), but did not complete a second set.
