The Winthrop High Lady Bulldog hockey team, which earned the fifth seed in the Division 1 State Tournament, will host the winner of the Arlington vs. Barnstable contest this Saturday evening at Larsen Rink. Face off time is 7:30.
Winthrop finished the season with a sterling 15-3-1 record en route to capturing the North Cape League championship. Arlington is the 12th seed with a 14-5-1 mark and Barnstable is No. 21 with a 9-7-4 record. Their contest was set to be played last night (Wednesday) as the Sun Transcript was going to press.
“We have a lot of respect for both teams,†said WHS head coach Anthony Martucci. “Their losses all have been to top quality teams.â€
Post season accolades poured in for the Winthrop squad, led by senior Captain and defenseman Taylor Brown, who was chosen the MVP of the North Cape League and was named to the All-Conference team (which includes the Metro and West leagues).
Joining Taylor on the all-conference squad was Lady Bulldog eighth grade goalie, Katie Burt. Teammates McKenzie Clark, Hannah LoPresti, Courtney McTague, and Cat Salvetti were named to the North Cape League all star team and Martucci was named the Coach of the Year for guiding his squad through its impressive season.
“We’re ready and looking forward to the start of the tourney,†said Martucci. “Our first game will be at home and we’re hoping for a good crowd to support us.â€
