Fucillo wins three events vs. Beverly

Jenny Fucillo continued her march through the Northeastern Conference, once again demolishing all comers in the hurdles in last week’s meet with Beverly. Jenny took first in the 400 intermediate hurdles in a time of 69.0 and first in the 100 meter high hurdles in 15.8. For good measure, the Lady Viking standout jumped to a first place finish in the long jump with a leap of 15-5 to give her 15 points on the day.

Freshman Alyssa Mackey also enjoyed a big day for Winthrop, capturing first in the 200 meter dash in 28.9, third in the 100 in 13.9, and third in the long jump with a landing of 14-9.

Other first place efforts for Winthrop were turned in by speedster Cortney Nolan in the 100 dash in 13.4 and Julia Wallace in the high jump with a leap of 4-8, a personal record (PR).

Jordan Griffiths was a double scorer with a second in the 800 in 2:39 and a third in the high jump with a 4-6 leap.

Michaela McCarthy landed a PR in the triple jump at 28-9, which was good for second place. Maria Rago grabbed a third in the 800 in 2:54, which also was a PR for Maria.

Kaitlyn Hersey (6:19), Nicole O’Brian (6:24), and Alyssa Moore (6:29) all ran well in the mile event for Winthrop.

Although the final score showed Beverly with 69 points to 43 for Winthrop, WHS head coach Warren MacPhail said he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“It was a terrific effort against the best team in the conference,” noted MacPhail, whose charges were set to take on Swampscott yesterday (Wednesday). The NEC’s Freshman/Sophomore Meet is this Saturday in Peabody.
