Lady Vikings do well in field, sprint events

The Winthrop High girls indoor track team fared well in the field and short distance events in their meet last week with Beverly.

Julia Wallace captured the high jump with a leap of 4-6 and Lauren MacMullen took a second in the shotput with a toss of 29-8.75, which was just 2.5 inches off the first place throw. Christina Russo also scored in the high jump with her leap of 4-2, good for third place.

The Lady Vikings captured both sprint events, with Jenny Fucillo blazing well ahead of the field in the 55 meter hurdles in 9.1 seconds and Christina Russo dashing to victory in the 55 meter event in 7.9.

Winthrop also grabbed a third in the hurdles thanks to Katie Cochrane with her time of 10.0 and a second in the 55 dash courtesy of Cortney Nolan’s 8.0 clocking.

Thus, the Lady Vikings took 23 of the possible 36 points in those four events. However, Winthrop could manage just four points the rest of the way, with Gina Giuliano taking second in the mile run in 7:18.4 and Jordan Griffith earning a third in the 1000 in 3:29.
