Vasili Tsiotos Named MIAA Student-Athlete of the Month

Winthrop High School senior Vasili Tsiotos was selected the MIAA Student-Athlete of the Month for January, 2024.

Tsiotos was nominated for the prestigious statewide award by Winthrop track coach Warren MacPhail.

“Nik Beshere and I have had the honor of coaching Vasili for two seasons,” said MacPhail. “He entered the program in his junior year and quickly became a leadership presence, always willing to try anything to help the team. He exemplifies all the great qualities of a true team leader. We’re very lucky to have him as our captain. The school and the Town of Winthrop should be very proud of him.”

Tsiotos was the starting All-Conference center for Coach Jon Cadigan’s Viking football team that qualified for the MIAA playoffs. A 6-foot forward, Vasili was an NEC All-Star and team MVP for Coach Quinton Dale’s basketball team this winter. He excels in multiple events for the outdoor track team.

Interestingly, Tsiotos took 22 offensive charges while playing defense for the hoop team this season. Many observers believe it is a school record for Winthrop High basketball, but certainly a testament to Vasili’s toughness and tenacity on the court.

Tsiotos transferred from Brimmer and May School to Winthrop High School as a junior. A member of the National Honor Society, he has been enrolled in five Advanced Placement courses.

Vasili is the son of former Winthrop High and Suffolk University basketball star Nick Tsiotos and Nitsa Tsiotos. He has a sister, Polixeni Tsiotos, a sophomore at Winthrop High School and a brother, Dino Tsiotos, who is a graduate of Winthrop High School and Suffolk University.

“I’m so delighted about his decision to return to the school district and attend Winthrop High School,” said Vasili’s father, Nick Tsiotos. “He’s receiving a great education and excellent academic guidance from the faculty and administration, and the coaching he has gotten in sports has been superb. He loves all his coaches.”

Vasili is considering his choices for college matriculation, including the University of Massachusetts’ outstanding Isenberg School of Management.
