If you’re George Galuris, you may want to start making room for the prestigious William “Bill” Rutherford Award on your trophy shelf.
“I thought George Galuris was the best player on the field on both sides of the ball,” summarized head coach Jon Cadigan.
Galuris, an All-Conference selection, was Winthrop’s leading rusher with 79 yards on 11 carries. He scored a touchdown, had a Marvin Harrison Jr.-style reception, and booted two PATs.
On defense, Galuris’ job was to set the edge on Revere’s jet sweep, “and he just physically dominated the edge and set up our other guys to make plays,” according to Cadigan.
Cadigan reasoned that when you win games like these on Thanksgiving, “you always have a senior that steps up, and this year it was George Galuris.”
“I’d say he has the inside track on the Rutherford Award (which is given to the most outstanding player in the Thanksgiving game),” concluded Cadigan. “George played a complete game and that’s the type of player he is.”
(Mr. Rutherford was a highly respected leader in the sports community in Winthrop for many years and a great supporter of WHS teams.)
