Jack Wallace Named New Winthrop High Golf Coach

Jack Wallace, a baseball and golf superstar during his athletic career at Winthrop High School, has been named as the new head coach of the Winthrop golf team. Wallace, 24, was an assistant coach of the Vikings last fall and was promoted to the head coaching position by Winthrop Director of Athletics Matt Serino. “We’re really excited to have Jack as our new golf coach,” said Serino. “He was an exceptional golfer for Winthrop High, our No. 1 player for two seasons. He was a great kid and a great athlete. Jack helped out with the baseball team in the spring. Coach [Mark] DeGregorio took him under his wing. He will be a great addition to our program. He’s super knowledgeable about golf.” Wallace said he expects approximately 15 players to be competing in the program this season. Two seniors, Andrew Faretra and Eli Wickham, were starting players last season and headline the returning cast. Incoming freshman Ryan Murphy, who competed as an eighth grader, will contend for one of the top positions on the Vikings’ ladder. Wallace, who graduated from Winthrop High in 2017, recorded one of the most impressive individual athletic feats in WHS history when he won the Northeastern Conference Golf Open, besting the No. 1 players from Marblehead and Swampscott who were part of his group. The following spring, Wallace led the NEC in batting (.505) for the Vikings, in addition to being an All-Conference pitcher. He later played baseball at Franklin Pierce College before continuing in his graduate studies at Eastern Connecticut State University where he received a master’s degree in Organizational Management. As a pitcher, Wallace helped ECSU win the Division 3 national championship. “We received our rings last fall,” proudly said Wallace, who was also a member of the ECSU golf team. Wallace is currently pitching for the Malden Mad Dogs in the Intercity Baseball League. But his major focus is now on golf and the son of Mark Wallace and Beth Tallent Wallace is hoping to lead the Vikings into the top echelon of the Northeastern Conference. “I want to bring golf back to the level where it was when I was in high school,” said Wallace. “We were contenders for the NEC title two out of my five years of varsity golf. I want to get the athletes more involved in golf and have the school community recognize that we have a golf course across the street, and we can be a pretty good golf town.” Winthrop’s returning varsity head coaches for the fall season are: Jonathan Cadigan (football), Tracey Martucci (girls soccer), Phil Ronan (boys soccer), Nik Beshere (boys and girls cross country), Lauren Kelley (girls volleyball), Briana Hogan (cheering), and Emily Bitchell (cheering).
