Holmes Ice Advantage: Emma Holmes Reaches 100-Point Milestone

Emma Holmes didn’t keep everyone in suspense. The Winthrop High girls hockey team’s senior captain went out on the power play and scored the first goal of the game against Medford High to enter the 100-point club. Winthrop defeated the Mustangs, 9-0, to remain undefeated.

It was another notable achievement during spectacular careers for Emma and her sisters, captains Julia (who has 95 career points herself) and Abby, a defenseman.

According to Coach Butch Martucci, Emma became the fourth Winthrop High player to reach the milestone, joining current assistant coach Taylor Brown (109 points), Caroline McKinnon (107), and Mia Price (100) as all-time point producers. Mackenzie Clark of Lynn also played in the Winthrop High girls hockey program.

“Emma’s unbelievable,” said Winthrop head coach Butch Martucci. “She’s about to take over the all-time Winthrop lead. But Julia is right behind her [in the 100-point chase].”

Emma Holmes talked about her historic point in an interview this week.

“My teammates were all trying to set me up with passes so I could get my 100th,” said Emma. “The goal was a back-hander through the five-hole.”

Holmes received a 100-point mini-hockey stick and puck from the team following the game.

“It’s definitely one of the highlights of my career,” said Holmes, a four-year varsity performer who plays on a line with her sister, Julia Holmes, and junior Samantha DiMento. “I want to say thank you to my team for helping me get to 100 points.”

Emma and her sisters have played on Butch Martucci-coached teams since Winthrop Youth Hockey. Those teams won multiple state championships.

“Coach Martucci has been with me since youth hockey, and we won a lot of state championships,” said Emma. “It was great to get my 100th point with him there. I want to thank Coach Martucci for sticking with me and supporting me through this journey since I was 10 years old.”

The daughter of Jay Holmes and Jennifer (Grande) Holmes, Emma said her main goals are team oriented.

“I want to see us develop as a team and go far in the playoffs and win the state championship,” said Emma, a very fast skater who hopes to continue her hockey career in college and has a scholarship offer from Saint Michael’s.

Emma’s father, Jay, who starred on a state finalist Dom Savio High School hockey team and played in the final at the Boston Garden, has been there every step of the way. Jay was an assistant coach on his daughters’ youth hockey teams.

“Emma is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen,” said Holmes. “She would come home even after games and work out in the garage shooting pucks. She’s focused on her nutrition. She went on a mission over the last few years and focused on getting more speed to her game, and getting her shot better, and making a commitment to get to this level and compete.”

Winthrop High Athletic Director Matt Serino, himself a 100-point scorer for Saugus High, said, “Over the past four years, it has been a pleasure being able to watch Emma and her sisters excel as three-sport athletes. Together they help push one another along with their teammates and have become tremendous leaders. Emma’s hard work and dedication are evident with her achieving a prestigious milestone, recording her 100th point as a member of our girls varsity hockey team.”
