WHS girls travel to Salem Tuesday

The Winthrop High girls basketball team will travel to Northeastern Conference rival Salem next Tuesday when they return from the holiday break.

Coach Anthony Hatzisavas and his Lady Viking crew took on yet another powerful non-conference rival, Newton North, one of the top-ranked teams in the state, last week, as they continued their tough, early-season schedule.

Although Winthrop came out on the short end of a 45-23 decision, the Lady Vikings battled hard throughout, overcoming an early 15-3 deficit after the first period and soon cutting the margin to 15-9.

Winthrop remained within striking range with a 10-point deficit at the half, but Newton No. pulled away after the intermission.

Grace Fleuriel had 10 points, despite battling foul trouble, and Maddie Stiglets hit for six points.

“Playing against the #3 team in the state, I was very happy with our effort,” said Hatzisavas.

Winthrop took on another strong non-league foe, Woburn, yesterday (Wednesday). After Tuesday’s encounter at Salem, they will trek to Newburyport next Thursday.

WHS girls hockey treks to Medford next week

The Winthrop High girls hockey team will travel to Northeast Hockey League (NHL) rival Medford next Wednesday when they return to action after the New Year’s break.

Coach Anthony Martucci and his Lady Viking crew took on Peabody yesterday (Wednesday) in a key early-season matchup between the rivals, who figure to be the top two contenders for the NHL title this season.

Powell wins hurdles event for girls track

Corinne Powell captured first place in the 55 meter hurdles for the Winthrop High girls indoor track and field team in the Lady Vikings’ meet with Gloucester last Thursday.

Corinne’s winning time of 11.0 seconds handily defeated her closest Lady Fisherman opponent, who came across in 12.3.

Also scoring a first-place finish for Winthrop was Libby Carney, who won the mile in a time of 6:35.6.

Arianna Cappuccio scored points for Winthrop in two events, taking third-place in the high jump with a leap of 4’-2” and in the 55 dash.

Teammate Sophia Munson placed second in the dash to add three points to the Winthrop scoresheet. Olivia Skomro added a point with a third-place effort in the 300 dash with a time of 54.5, as did Kailey Sullivan in the 600 in 2:25.6 and Olivia Nystrom in the 1000 in 4:18.4.

On the boys’ side, point-scorers were Brady Tallent with a second place in the 55 hurdles in a clocking of 11.3 and Benjamin Prew in the mile in 5:39.4, which was good for third place.
