A Perfect Season: Caggiano Brothers Reunite With Dom Savio’s 1982 Super Bowl Team

Winthrop’s Peter Caggiano was a starting offensive lineman on the 1982 Dom Savio High School football team.

That East Boston powerhouse won the Division 4 Super Bowl with a 14-12 victory over Rockland at BU’s Nickerson Field, completing a perfect 11-0 season.

On Sunday, Caggiano and his younger brother, Mark Caggiano, also an offensive lineman, reunited with their teammates at a 40th anniversary luncheon at Anthony’s in Malden.

Caggiano, a junior offensive guard in 1982, had an outstanding season for a prolific Savio offense led by quarterback Peter Milano of Saugus and running backs Brian McCarthy of South Boston and Sean O’Toole of Dorchester. The co-head coaches were Bill Maradei and Reg Lanciani.

The 1982 Savio defense, led by All-Scholaastic defensive end Joe Gaff, was even more dominating, holding opponents to a single touchdown during the regular season. One of the team’s nine shutouts was a 2-0 decision over Don Bosco when Angelo Fantasia tackled the Bosco quarterback in the end zone for a safety on the final play of the game.

Peter Caggiano went on to be a captain of the 1983 Savio team that had a 7-3 record. His brother, Mark Caggiano, became a captain of the 1984 Savio team.

Peter was a three-year starter for the Spartans. His brother lined up next to him for the 1983 Spartans as a starting offensive tackle.

“This is fantastic to be back with this team,” said Peter, who is president of the Winthrop Youth Football organization. “I see some of these guys all the time, but a lot of these guys I haven’t seen since high school. It’s great being here.”

Peter and Mark said their parents, Ernest Caggiano and Annette Caggiano, attended every game during the 1982 season.

“We used to own the ambulance service in Winthrop, so my father donated the ambulance for home games,” recalled Peter.

Mark Caggiano said of Savio’s Super Bowl season and being a starting lineman situated adjacently to his older brother, “Peter was a much better player than I was. It was an honor to follow him as a team captain. I have great memories of playing football at Savio.”
