Golfers Swing Into Action To Open 2022 Fall Athletic Season

Winthrop High athletes are in full pre-season mode, with all of the Viking fall sports teams having reported for duty this past week.

The WHS golfers, under the direction of head coach Weston Lazarus and new assistant coach Jack Wallace, will swing into action to inaugurate the 2022 campaign when they host Salem at the Winthrop Golf Club this Monday, August 30. The Vikings then will travel to Peabody next Thursday, September 1.

The WHS girls’ soccer team, under the direction of long-time head coach Tracey Martucci, will participate in a pre-season jamboree this coming weekend at Medford. They will open their 2022 season at Swampscott on Labor Day.

The boys’ soccer team, led by first-year head coach Phil Ronan, will scrimmage two former Northeastern Conference opponents who now are members of the Greater Boston League. Ronan and his crew will make the short trek to Revere this Monday and then will entertain Lynn Classical next Thursday evening under the lights at Miller Field at 6:45.

The Vikings will play their first regular-season match at Saugus on September 7.

Head coach Lauren Kelly and the WHS girls’ volleyball team will scrimmage Watertown this Tuesday before opening their season against Excel Academy on September 7.

The WHS cross-country teams, led by head coach Nik Beshere, will entertain Beverly on September 7 to open their 2022 campaign.
