Flag Raising and French Square Rededication

The Town of Winthrop held its French Square re-dedication and flag-raising ceremony on June 14, which is Flag Day.

Town Council President James Letterie served as master of ceremonies for the program at the newly refurbished landmark gathering place in Winthrop Center.

Letterie began his remarks by recognizing former House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo for his immense help in securing the funding to launch the project.

“Speaker DeLeo has always been there for his beloved Winthrop and I can assure you it is very much appreciated,” said Letterie.

Letterie also thanked the business community, led by Winthrop Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Betsy Shane, for its patience and understanding during the construction process.

“I would also like to thank Giosso Construction Company and our engineers, Woodward and Curran, for being good partners,” said Letterie.

Letterie noted that Harold E. French Jr. – for whom French Square is named – graduated from Winthrop High School in 1938 and was a radioman in the U.S. Navy Reserves for four years. Mr. French was the first Winthrop serviceman to lose his life during World War II.

“Today we re-dedicate this square to Radioman Harold E. French Jr. and thank him for his service and ultimate sacrifice for his town and country,” said Letterie.

Town Manager Tony Marino also spoke at the program. Marino thanked DPW Director Steve Calla and his department for the landscaping and maintenance of the new square. Marino also thanked the business owners for their patience during the construction project.

Marino then called upon Fire Chief Scott Wiley, Deputy Police Chief John Goodwin, and members of American Legion Post 146 to conduct the official flag-raising ceremony.
