WHS Girls Hockey Opens with 10-1 Win

The Winthrop High girls hockey team opened its season with a 10-1 runaway victory over non-league rival Shawsheen Academy this past Saturday afternoon on the ice of the Eruzione Center at Larsen Rink.

“It was a great season-opener,” said veteran WHS head coach Anthony Martucci.

The victory was a total team effort in every respect. An amazing nine Lady Vikings found the back of the Shawsheen net to account for the 10 goals and senior goalie and captain Summer Tallent made 16 saves to earn her 43rd career win.

Three members of the Winthrop defensive corps —  captain Elle English, Abby Holmes, and Adrianna Rizzotto — scored goals. In addition, two Lady Vikings — freshman Tori Bates and senior Kendall Brant (a transfer from Tilton Academy) — registered their first goals in a WHS uniform.

“I was very proud of the entire team,” noted Martucci. “I thought our defense was excellent. Elle English, Abby Holmes, Adrianna Rizzotto, Tegan Pereira, Avalina Coffey, Casey Petersen, and Izi Hain all played fantastically in front of Summer Tallent in net.

“Up front, our four lines really shone,” the coach continued. “The trio of Emma and Julia Holmes with Talia Martucci had 12 points combined. Mia Norris, Mia Martucci, and Kendall Brant finished with nine points total. The grind line of Lily Tallent, Hannah Parker, and Sami DiMento played like beasts, and the young guns, Tori Bates, Gabby Buonapane, and Izzy Cash were flying.

“Overall it was a great first win of the season,” added Martucci. “We will go back to work in practice to get ready for Newburyport on Saturday.”

Doubleheader for WHS Girls, Boys Hockey Saturday

The Winthrop High girls and boys both will take to the ice of the Eruzione Center at Larsen Rink this Saturday afternoon.

The WHS girls, coming off a 10-1 win in their season-opener last Saturday against non-league opponent Shawsheen, will open their 2022 Northeast Hockey League (NHL) schedule when coach Anthony Martucci and his crew host Newburyport at 1:30.

Coach Dale Dunbar and his Viking boys’ squad, whose scheduled opener last Saturday at Medford was postponed, then will take to the ice at 3:30 when they will entertain Northeastern Conference North Division rival Danvers.

After Saturday’s encounters, both squads will be back in action next Wednesday, December 22. The girls will journey to Salem State College to meet NHL foe Marblehead for a 6:30 face-off, while the boys will be back at Larsen on Wednesday evening to host non-league opponent Lynnfield for a 6:10 faceoff.

Trio Hit Double-Figures for WHS Boys in Opening Win

The Winthrop High boys basketball team opened its 2022 season in fine fashion with a 71-38 victory over Salem Charter Academy this past Tuesday evening on the Chris Tsiotis floor at Winthrop High.

Second-year head coach Mike Triant’s squad jumped out to a 16-8 lead after one period, with Zach Bogusz (seven points) and George Galuris (six points) combining to do most of the damage, and lengthened their advantage to 29-12 at the half.

“We were paced by some great defense, both full-court and in the half-court,” noted Triant, whose team drained 10 three-pointers on the night.

Three Vikings struck for double-figures, led by Galuris with 20 points, Bogusz with 19, and Chris Cappuccio with 15. Luca Zanelli fell just short of doubles with nine points.

The triumph proved to be the culmination of what Triant termed “a great week” of pre-season activity for his squad last week.

Winthrop scrimmaged East Boston High last Wednesday

at the Salesian Boys & Girls Club.

“The place was electric with about 200 fans,” said Triant. “It was a predominantly-Eastie crowd and I thought it was a great environment to put our guys in.

“We were down both starting point guards and Mikey Chaves did an amazing job keeping us on track offensively.  Our defense and our work ethic were tireless,” Triant added.

Zanelli and Cappuccio led the way in the scoring department, with Bogusz contributing some big buckets in key situations.

After falling behind early, 10-2, the Vikings burst to a 15- point lead at the intermission. Winthrop held onto their advantage throughout the second half and then fended-off a late East Boston run to come away with a 60-54 win.

Triant and his crew will open their Northeastern Conference schedule this Monday at Saugus and will make the long trek to Gloucester next Wednesday.

WHS Girls Win Opener, Host Two Games Next Week

The Winthrop High girls basketball team opened its season with a 75-31 victory over Salem Charter Academy this past Tuesday evening at Winthrop High.

The Lady Vikings have a busy week ahead as they begin play against their Northeastern Conference rivals.

Winthrop will trek to Salem tomorrow (Friday) and then return home to entertain Saugus on Monday and Gloucester on Wednesday.

The opening tip for both of the home games is set for 6:00.
