Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution (MassDAR) honored Winthrop resident Richard Honan with the Outstanding Veteran Volunteer Award at the Holiday Inn in Mansfield on Friday, September 17. Richard Honan met President General Denise Doring VanBuren, the national leader of the DAR.
Winthrop resident Karen True and her DAR chapter, Boston Tea Party, sponsored Honan for this award. It is presented to a veteran in recognition of outstanding achievement in personal, professional, and family life. Applicants must prove significant contributions of leadership, patriotism, and increased public awareness of veterans. Richard won not just in Massachusetts, but at the Northeast Division (New England and New York) level as well.
Honan was accompanied by his wife, Mary Ellen Honan. Several Boston Tea Party Chapter members were also in attendance including Winthrop residents Susan Gerow, Darlene Brown and Alyssa True.
In his acceptance speech, Honan thanked the DAR for the recognition and said his goal is to be the best he can be.
“Given what we have, we do the best we can,†he said.
