Hubert Named Boston Globe All-Scholastic

When Jon Cadigan presented the Irving P. Alexander Memorial Trophy to Bobby Hubert at the Winthrop High football awards banquet, the head coach noted that Hubert would be taking his rightful place among the greatest players in the program’s history.

The Boston Globe has affirmed Hubert’s all-time status by naming him to its 2021 All-Scholastic Football Team. The Globe Team has long been considered the ‘Heismans’ of high school football in Massachusetts.

Interestingly, Hubert has held a long-time connection to New England’s largest and most respected newspaper. His father, Danny, has worked in printing operations at the Globe for the past 40 years. His mother is Kathy Hubert.

Hubert said he first envisioned being an “All-Scholastic” when he was a ninth grader at Winthrop High.

“Ever since freshman year, I saw there was a trophy case in the school and it said ‘Boston Globe All-Scholastic’ and I knew that I wanted to be one,” related Hubert. “So when I got the news from Coach Cadigan, I was proud of myself and I knew it was a big honor, and I was happy that I had set the goal and I had succeeded with it.”

Hubert rushed for 410 yards and scored eight touchdowns this season as the Vikings captured the Northeastern Conference South championship. Cadigan also revealed at the awards banquet that on the crucial, final defensive play of the season, it was Hubert’s jam-up of a Masconomet receiver that forced the Masconomet quarterback to look the other way, where teammate Ryan Hovermale made his incredible breakup of the pass that sealed the Vikings’ 16-14 victory in the memorable season finale. That play was the exclamation point to the Vikings’ sensational 5-1 season.

Hubert said he was thankful to Cadigan and the coaching staff.

“I respect Coach Cadigan and I’m going to miss everything that he’s done for me and the team the last four years,” said Hubert. “My senior year we were 5-1 and NEC champions, so I have a lot of respect for Coach Cadigan and the great job he did with our program.”

Hubert credited the superb blocking of the Vikings’ offensive line this season. “The line did their job and I want to thank them for such a great year.”

He said quarterback Dillon “Duke” Doherty’s return was instrumental in the Vikings’ run to the title. Doherty received “Honorable Mention” from the Globe.

“Dillon coming back from Everett – I played football with him in third grade, so I was happy in my first year and my last year, I was able to be teammates with him at quarterback,” said Hubert. “I know he wanted to come back and play with his hometown friends, so I’m happy that he came back and I’m happy that we were so successful.”

Hubert will begin practices Aug. 11 in the Springfield College football program. He hopes to earn a position as a halfback. Winthrop football player and projected fullback Tyler Rockefeller will also be playing at Springfield, so the possibility exists that the Springfield Pride could become mainly the Viking Pride on offense.
