WMS Student Council Excels in Bettering the Community

The Winthrop Middle School Student Council is learning just how much of a rippling effect hard work has on a community. Last week, the student council presented Survivors by the Sea (SBTS) and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer with a $750 check each, after several weeks of dedicating their Fridays to raising funds. 

Each Friday, the diligent students went to work selling raffle tickets for Air Pods, to their fellow classmates. They also executed a successful bake sale and encouraged other students to wear pink on Fridays.

“Survivors by the Seas is honored and humbled to accept this donation from future leaders of this community,” said Police Sgt. Maryellen Crisafi, who is a survivor. “These students organized and executed efforts to make life better for others and that says that the families and Winthrop Middle School is doing something right. Under the guidance of Miss Amy Gallagher, these students are excelling in community care-taking, volunteerism, and just being overall good kids. Survivors by the Sea thanks them and wants the student council to know that their efforts have a ripple effect, as we will now use these funds to help individuals and families struggling with cancer. Survivors by the Sea is a local group of cancer warriors, caregivers and survivors. In 2006, the group started with eight Winthrop cancer patients, and today they have over 150 members.

The American Cancer Society started Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks to unite communities in the fight against this deadly disease. Today, Making Strides is the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation.
